Three ways a watch enters your hand on the secondary market — used, vintage, neo-vintage. Each one has different rules, different risks, different prices. This guide makes them concrete.

The Three Categories

Before any inspection, identify which kind of watch you are looking at. The category sets the rules that follow.

Used (Pre-Owned)

The bridge era. Modern enough to service factory. Old enough to have discontinued references and meaningful variations. Real upside if you pick the right ref.

The pre-owned market sorts into five tiers. Higher tiers cost more and carry less risk. Lower tiers are cheaper and demand more skill to buy safely.

Most options are open. Brand CPO and authorised resellers cover almost every modern reference. Pay the premium for the warranty.

A full set adds value. Its absence does not kill the deal — it changes the price you should pay.

A full set is the watch plus everything that left the boutique with it on day one. Box, warranty card, booklet, original receipt, extra links, service records.

Full set adds 10–20%. Most modern pieces still have it. No papers means a price drop, not a refusal.

Neo-Vintageنيو-ڤنتيج

Premium grows. A full-set neo-vintage piece can sit 30% above watch-only. Production-year accuracy is what auctioneers price on.

Full set can double the value. A 1970 Submariner with stamped guarantee and original hangtag is in another league from the watch alone.

If there are no papers

Cross-check the serial number against brand databases or the manufacturer.
Negotiate 10–25% off versus a full-set comparable.
Patek Philippe offers an Extract from the Archives ($300) — confirms originality but does not replace the original papers.

Inspecting the Watch

Seven points. Each one tells you something the seller will not.

Inspect every watch in the same order. Each point below has a photo showing what to look at, then what passes and what fails.

1 · Case & Lugs

Lug edges — sharp or rounded

حواف الأذنين — حادة أو مستديرة

Hold the case sideways under direct light. Sharp lug bevels = unpolished, original geometry. Rounded, soft edges = polished at service. Light polish costs 5–15%; heavy polishing on a vintage piece costs 30–60%.

Dial print & alignment

الميناء — طباعة وانتظام

Look for crisp print, indices straight, no smudging or refinish patches. A redialled face wipes 30–60% off the value across all three categories — and it is the single most-faked element on vintage pieces.

3 · Crown & Pushers

Crown action and pusher feel

التاج والأزرار

A screw-down crown should turn smoothly and seat firmly. Chronograph pushers need a clean click — not mushy, not stuck. Wobble or stiffness signals worn threads or a missing service.

التاج اللي يلتف لازم يدور بسلاسة ويثبت بإحكام. أزرار الكرونوغراف تعطي صوت كلكة واضحة — مو ميتة ولا عالقة. الاهتزاز أو التيبس يدل على خرز التاج المستهلك أو صيانة مؤجلة.

4 · Lume

Lume tone — uniform across the dial

الإنارة — لون موحد على كل الميناء

All markers and the hands should age together. Mismatched lume (one bright marker among yellowed ones, or hands that do not match the dial) means parts have been swapped. On vintage, even patina is the most desirable signal — and the easiest to fake.

5 · Bracelet

Stretch test & pin condition

Hold the watch by the case and pull the bracelet sideways. Looseness between links means stretched pins — common, fixable, costs $150–400. Heavy stretch is normal wear, not a dealbreaker. The clasp should close with a positive click.

Engraving depth & serial integrity

عمق الحفر والرقم التسلسلي

Original engraving is deep and crisp under raked light. Shallow, fuzzy, or re-stamped numbers indicate a tampered serial — almost always a stolen or counterfeit piece. Cross-check the serial against the brand or a paid authentication service before paying.

7 · Movement

Timing test & service interval

اختبار الدقة وفترة الصيانة

Use a phone timing app to read rate, beat error, and amplitude. A piece running over 20 sec/day fast or slow needs service — subtract $600–1,500 from the asking price. Ask for the last service date; on vintage, anything beyond 5–7 years means a service is due.
